Sudden symptoms need urgent care: sudden vision loss, facial drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty can be signs of stroke. Call 000 immediately if stroke is suspected, even if symptoms pass. Do not wait for a routine optometry appointment.
Visual symptoms after neurological injury
Stroke or brain injury may affect the visual field, eye movements or how visual information is interpreted. Symptoms such as double vision or difficulty navigating need assessment to identify the problem and appropriate care. Assessment and coordinated care
Bring relevant medical reports, current glasses and details of your treating team. Tell us about reading, mobility, work and other activities that have become difficult. An eye examination helps guide discussion of findings, referrals and management options.
Depending on the problem, care may involve an ophthalmologist, orthoptist, occupational therapist or other rehabilitation professional. The goal may be adapting to a change in vision rather than restoring a lost visual field. What is the Neuro-Vision Rehabilitator?
The Neuro-Vision Rehabilitator (NVR) is a computer-based system that presents visual tasks with interactive feedback. The historical system described below uses Wii controllers, sensors and a balance board. Its suitability depends on assessment; ask the practice about current equipment and availability.

A 2011 Journal of Behavioral Optometry product review of the NVR describes its hardware and task modules. A product review does not establish treatment effectiveness for every neurological condition.
Evidence and realistic expectations
Evidence depends on the condition, treatment and outcome being measured. A 2019 Cochrane review of treatment for visual field defects after stroke found limited, low-quality evidence for scanning training and insufficient evidence to draw firm conclusions about restoring visual fields. This review should not be read as proof that NVR restores vision.
Discuss the aim of any proposed programme, alternatives, expected costs, possible discomfort and how progress will be reviewed. Improvement in a training task does not automatically establish improved everyday function or fitness to drive.
