Visagraph records eye movements while a person reads. It can add information to a discussion about visual symptoms, but the recording alone does not explain a reading difficulty or determine a treatment. Ask our Bondi or Mosman team whether this assessment is relevant to your appointment.

What is Visagraph?

Visagraph uses infrared sensors in a pair of goggles connected to a computer. The system records eye movements during a reading task and produces a report for interpretation.

Understanding the recording

Reports describe features such as fixations (pauses) and regressions (backward movements through the text). These measurements describe what happened during the task; they do not by themselves identify the cause of a reading difficulty.

Reading level and the difficulty of the text affect eye-movement patterns. RANZCO’s position statement on learning difficulties explains that these patterns should not be treated as proof of a tracking disorder causing dyslexia.

How it fits into an eye assessment

Reading difficulties and next steps

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder. Eye care can address a coexisting eye condition, but eye-movement exercises are not an evidence-based treatment for dyslexia. Seek early educational assessment and appropriate reading support rather than delaying help while pursuing vision testing.

What does Visagraph record?
