Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the right quality of tears to keep the surface of your eyes adequately lubricated. Symptoms can include dryness, irritation, redness, and blurred vision.
Why Eyelid Hygiene Matters in Dry Eye Relief
Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins. Crusting, skin conditions, bacteria and changes in the oil-producing glands can contribute. It should not be assumed that symptoms are simply caused by poor hygiene. An examination helps identify the likely cause.
Meibomian gland dysfunction can affect the oily layer of tears and contribute to dry-eye symptoms. If symptoms persist despite home care, discuss them with your optometrist rather than increasing cleansing or adding products yourself.
What Is SMART MeiboCleanse?
SMART MeiboCleanse is the practice’s name for in-practice eyelid cleansing. It may form part of a care plan when eyelid findings support it. It does not address every cause of dry eye and cannot guarantee lasting relief.
The procedure uses an eyelid-cleansing gel. Ask your clinician which formulation is used, what it contains and whether it suits your allergies, skin sensitivity and eye health. Plant-derived ingredients do not by themselves establish safety or treatment benefit.
Comfort and response vary. Discuss the expected benefit, possible irritation, alternatives, cost and follow-up before deciding on treatment.
How the Treatment Works
Your clinician explains the proposed steps and follows the product instructions. An appointment may include:
- Preparation: You’ll relax in a reclined position with your eyes closed.
- Application: The clinician applies an appropriate eyelid cleanser using the method specified for that product.
- Cleansing: The clinician cleans the eyelid margin to remove visible debris.
- Rinse and Dry: The cleanser is removed as directed by the product instructions.
- Feedback and Aftercare: Tell the clinician about discomfort or irritation and ask what home care and follow-up are recommended.
Ingredients and Evidence
Research on an ingredient or another product cannot establish the results of this procedure. A 2021 study of 52 patients with Demodex blepharitis compared an okra eyelid patch with a tea-tree-oil patch over three months. It did not test SMART MeiboCleanse or a single in-practice cleansing appointment.

An Individual Plan for Ongoing Care
Your optometrist will assess your eyelids, tear film and symptoms before recommending a care plan. In-practice eyelid cleansing may be considered when appropriate; it is not a routine requirement for everyone. Results and the need for ongoing care vary between patients.
Follow-up frequency and any home-care routine should be tailored to your findings and response to treatment. Ask your optometrist which products and techniques are suitable for you.
