What to Expect from Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) at Smart Vision Optometry
This guide explains the early stages and ongoing care involved in Orthokeratology (Ortho-K). Ortho-K uses prescribed overnight lenses to temporarily change the corneal shape. Suitable patients may see clearly during the day without glasses, but vision, adaptation and the wearing schedule vary. Your optometrist will confirm your individual review schedule and lens instructions.
First Morning
- Initial Changes: Your vision may change after the first night, but the amount and timing of improvement vary.
- Morning Sensitivity: Pain, redness, unusual light sensitivity, discharge or worsening vision need prompt assessment. Remove your lenses and contact an eye care professional immediately; do not reinsert them until advised.
- Driving Precautions: Arrange transport if your vision is not adequate for driving. Ask your optometrist what temporary correction is appropriate as your vision changes.
- Assessment: Your Smart Vision optometrist will check your lens insertion and removal techniques, assess vision changes, and examine eye health. Corneal topography will determine how well the Ortho-K lenses are reshaping your cornea.
After One Week
- Vision Improvement: Do not assume that vision will be fully corrected after one week. Your review establishes how your eyes are responding.
- Ongoing Assessment: Your Smart Vision optometrist will measure lens performance and check eye health. The time needed for stable vision differs between patients.
- Lens Adjustment: If necessary, we may fine-tune your lens parameters and order replacements. Ask the practice to confirm the applicable fitting, replacement and warranty terms.
Ongoing Follow-Ups
- Scheduled Visits: Follow-up appointments monitor vision, corneal health and lens fit. Your Smart Vision optometrist will schedule these at appropriate intervals.
- Issue Resolution: Remove lenses and seek immediate eye care advice for pain, redness, unusual light sensitivity, discharge or sudden blurred vision. Do not wait a day for these symptoms to settle.
Treatment Time
- Adjustment Period: Adaptation is individual and may require lens adjustments. Report discomfort to your optometrist; do not assume that persistent pain is a normal adjustment.
- Temporary Spectacles: Ask the practice what temporary spectacles or other correction is suitable while your vision changes. Do not select or change contact lenses without advice.
Troubleshooting
- Common Issues: Possible problems include lens binding, corneal staining, solution reactions and fluctuating vision. Overnight lens wear also carries a risk of serious corneal infection. Careful hygiene and follow-up reduce risk but do not eliminate it.
- Night Vision: Some patients, especially those with large pupils, may notice halos and glare at night. Report halos or glare at your review and avoid driving when your vision is unsafe. Your optometrist will assess the cause and discuss appropriate options.
Commitment to Your Eye Health
Regular reviews help monitor the cornea, vision and lens fit. Follow your prescribed care and replacement schedule; ask your optometrist when your specific lenses and case should be replaced.

Questions about starting Ortho-K
Is the vision correction permanent?
No. The corneal reshaping effect is temporary and needs ongoing lens wear on the prescribed schedule. See the FDA explanation of Ortho-K.
What should I do if my eye becomes painful or red?
Stop lens wear and contact an eye care professional immediately. Do not restart without advice. See contact-lens warning signs.
Where can I discuss suitability?
Book an Ortho-K assessment at Bondi Beach or Mosman. Ask about alternatives, lens care, review visits and costs before deciding.
