Advanced eye-health testing adds detail about eye structures and visual function when needed. This page explains retinal photography, OCT, slit-lamp examination and visual-field testing at Smart Vision Optometry in Bondi and Mosman, and how to discuss results, follow-up and fees.

Advanced Eye Health Testing at Smart Vision Optometry
At Smart Vision Optometry, advanced eye health testing uses diagnostic technology to support early detection, monitoring and management of eye disease.
Testing may include digital retinal imaging, OCT scans, slit lamp examination, visual field testing and other eye health assessments where clinically appropriate. Smart Vision Optometry uses advanced testing to assess the health of the retina, optic nerve, macula and other important eye structures, even when a patient’s vision appears clear.
The results are interpreted together with your symptoms, history and examination. Your optometrist can explain whether monitoring, additional testing or referral is appropriate.
Why Regular Eye Examinations are Essential
Changes in eye health do not always cause noticeable symptoms. Examination can combine checks of visual clarity and prescription with assessment of eye structures and side vision. Read the National Eye Institute’s explanation of a dilated eye examination, then discuss the appropriate tests and review interval with your optometrist.
Advanced Vision Health Testing Services
The following tests provide different views of your eye health. They may be used individually or together when clinically indicated:
Digital Retinal Camera
Retinal photographs record the appearance of the retina, its blood vessels and the optic nerve at the back of the eye. They provide a visual record that can be compared at later appointments. Photographs support the assessment; your optometrist considers them alongside the rest of the examination.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scanning
Optical coherence tomography uses light waves to produce cross-sectional images of the retina. This non-invasive scan provides information about retinal layers and can help monitor changes over time. The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains how OCT works. Your optometrist can explain why a scan is recommended and how the findings relate to your care.

Slit Lamp Examination
A slit lamp examination allows a close view of structures at the front of the eye, including the cornea, iris and lens. Its findings help assess these structures and guide any further examination needed.
Visual Acuity and Visual Field Tests
Visual acuity testing measures how clearly you see, while visual field testing examines peripheral or side vision. These are different measurements. Changes can prompt further assessment and are interpreted with your other findings.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in advanced eye health testing?
Advanced eye health testing may include digital retinal imaging, OCT scans, slit lamp examination, visual field testing or other relevant assessments.
Why is advanced eye health testing important?
It can help detect and monitor eye disease earlier, including conditions that may develop before obvious symptoms appear.
Do I need advanced eye health testing if my sight seems fine?
Potentially yes. Some eye conditions can develop without noticeable vision changes in the early stages.
Personalised Eye Care Solutions
Your results guide the discussion about glasses, contact lenses, monitoring or referral where appropriate. If your concerns also involve the visual demands of reading, work or daily activities, our Vision Skills Assessment explains the related assessment of visual function.
Discussing Your Test Results
Ask which structures were examined, what the results show and whether comparison at a future appointment is recommended. Our eye test overview explains the broader appointment, and our article on the relationship between sight and vision provides background on why clear eyesight is only one part of the assessment.
