Children’s eye assessments consider symptoms, vision and eye health. Seek advice for a concern at any age rather than waiting for a fixed birthday. Screening and follow-up help identify children who need further assessment.

Paediatric Optometrist In Sydney
Smart Vision Optometry provides children’s eye assessments at our Bondi Beach and Mosman practices. Tell us your child’s age, symptoms and any previous screening or examination results when booking so we can discuss an appropriate appointment.
When should a child’s vision be checked?
Do not wait until age three or school entry if you notice a concern or receive a referral. Report blur, an eye turn, persistent headaches or difficulty with visual tasks. These observations need assessment; they do not identify the cause on their own. Our children’s vision problems guide explains common concerns.
NSW Health’s StEPS program offers free vision screening for four-year-olds at NSW preschools and long day care centres. Follow the advice in a screening report, and ask the local coordinator about a missed screening. Screening is not a substitute for assessing persistent symptoms.
What does an assessment involve?
The optometrist asks about symptoms, health, family history and previous care. Testing is selected for the child’s age and needs, and may include clarity, prescription, eye alignment, focusing and eye health. Healthdirect explains common eye tests; our eye-test overview describes the SVO appointment pathway.
Children do not all need the same tests or treatment. The clinician should explain the findings, whether glasses, monitoring or referral are appropriate, and when to return. Our related SVO article on sight and vision explains why distance-chart clarity is only part of an examination.
Reading, learning and eye care
An eye condition can coexist with a learning difficulty, but an eye examination does not diagnose every reason for difficulty reading or concentrating. RANZCO recommends educational assessment and evidence-based teaching for suspected dyslexia. Eye care should not delay that support or promise improved academic achievement.
Preparing for the visit
Bring current glasses, screening or referral letters, previous eye reports and a medication list. Let us know about communication, sensory or other support needs. Ask the practice about appointment arrangements, fees and any applicable rebate before attending.
Does my child need to wait until age three for an eye assessment?
No. Seek advice when a concern arises or a health professional recommends assessment. Age, symptoms, screening findings and medical history guide the timing.
Is preschool vision screening the same as a full eye examination?
No. Screening checks selected aspects of vision and identifies children who may need further assessment. Follow any referral advice and report persistent symptoms even after a screening.
Will an eye assessment explain a reading or learning difficulty?
It can identify a coexisting eye problem, but reading and learning difficulties can have other causes. Appropriate educational or medical assessment may also be needed.
Book a Children’s Eye Assessment
Book online or call Bondi (02) 9365 5047 or Mosman (02) 9969 1600 to discuss your child’s needs. Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain or an eye injury needs urgent assessment rather than a routine booking.
Care built around your individual needs
Discuss your needs with our Smart Vision behavioural optometrists. Your detailed assessment guides a personalised wellness treatment programme where appropriate.
