At a glance
- Digital eye strain describes temporary eye and visual symptoms that occur during or after prolonged screen use.
- Regular breaks, comfortable screen positioning, suitable lighting and attention to blinking may improve comfort, but no single strategy works for everyone.
- Current evidence does not show that blue-light-filtering spectacles reliably reduce short-term computer-related eye strain.
What is digital eye strain?
Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, is a group of eye, visual and musculoskeletal symptoms associated with prolonged use of computers, tablets or phones. The 2023 systematic review of digital eye strain in users under 40 found that symptoms and risk factors are reported in many studies, while differences in definitions and measurement limit precise conclusions.
Symptoms can include tired or uncomfortable eyes, dryness, burning, intermittent blur, difficulty refocusing, headaches, and neck or shoulder discomfort. They may reflect more than screen exposure alone. Reduced blinking, dry air, glare, unsuitable working distance, posture, an uncorrected prescription or a focusing or eye-coordination issue can contribute.
Does screen use permanently damage the eyes?
Digital eye strain is usually discussed as a comfort and visual-performance problem, not proof that routine computer use is permanently damaging an adult’s eyes. Persistent or unusual symptoms still deserve assessment because another eye, vision or health issue may be present.
Screen habits should also not be presented as the sole cause of myopia. Myopia has multiple influences, and evidence about near work, outdoor time and screen use is more complex than a guaranteed cause-and-effect claim for one person.
Practical ways to improve screen comfort
- Take regular short breaks and look away from the screen. A small study of 20-20-20 reminders reported reduced symptoms during the reminder period, but most measured eye signs did not change and the improvement was not sustained after reminders stopped.
- Place the screen at a comfortable distance and height, enlarge text if needed, and reduce reflections or excessive contrast.
- Blink normally and address airflow or dryness rather than concentrating on the screen without breaks.
- Use an up-to-date prescription suited to the working distance if an optometrist identifies a need.
The 20-20-20 reminder study supports trying regular breaks for symptom relief, but it does not establish a universal cure. The best adjustment depends on the task, workstation and person.
What does the evidence say about blue-light glasses?
A 2023 Cochrane review found that blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses may not reduce short-term eye-strain symptoms compared with ordinary lenses. Blue-light filtering should therefore not be promoted as a guaranteed or necessary treatment for digital eye strain.
When should you arrange an assessment?
Arrange professional advice when symptoms are frequent, persist after sensible screen changes, affect work or study, or include repeated blur, double vision or headaches. Sudden vision loss, new severe eye pain, flashes, a sudden increase in floaters or a curtain-like shadow need urgent assessment rather than routine screen advice.
