At a glance: Eye examinations assess defined aspects of vision and eye health. Clear distance vision does not describe every visual function, and earlier assessment cannot guarantee that every condition will be prevented.

Eye health awareness in Bondi and across Sydney

Eye health deserves attention throughout the year. An eye examination can assess refractive error, visual function and eye health, while the timing and scope of follow-up should reflect each person’s age, symptoms, history and clinical findings.

The World Health Organization reports that at least 2.2 billion people globally have near or distance vision impairment and that at least 1 billion cases could have been prevented or are yet to be addressed. This global estimate includes many different causes and does not mean that every condition is preventable through a routine eye examination.

A standard comprehensive eye examination commonly includes visual acuity, refractive assessment and eye-health evaluation. Depending on a person’s symptoms and needs, an optometrist may also assess focusing, eye teaming, eye movements and how visual information is used, or recommend a separate assessment. The purpose and limits of any additional testing should be explained.

Visual acuity, such as 20/20 or 6/6, describes the ability to resolve detail at a specified distance under test conditions. It does not by itself describe every aspect of eye health or visual performance. Our explanation of how the eyes and brain create vision explores this distinction.

Everyday visual tasks can also draw on focusing, binocular coordination, eye movements, attention and interpretation. Difficulties in these areas can have different causes, so an individual assessment is more useful than assuming that one test or one symptom provides the whole answer.

Common causes of vision impairment include uncorrected refractive error, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The likelihood and impact of these conditions vary, and vision impairment can affect people at different ages.

Clear vision supports learning, work, mobility and participation. For children, parents can arrange an assessment when they notice blurred vision, headaches, squinting, avoidance of near work or other concerns; the optometrist can then recommend an appropriate review interval.

Our guide to practical eye care and eye protection explains several measures with different purposes. Earlier assessment may allow correction, monitoring, treatment or referral to begin sooner where appropriate, but it cannot guarantee prevention or a particular outcome.

Some eye conditions can be corrected or treated, while others are monitored or managed to reduce risk and support function. The appropriate response depends on the diagnosis and may involve an optometrist, general practitioner, ophthalmologist or another health professional.

Symptoms such as irritation or fluctuating vision have many possible causes. Treatment should follow an assessment rather than a general assumption that one product or program will prevent a more serious condition.

For irreversible vision loss, low-vision rehabilitation may help a person use remaining vision and access practical supports; it does not restore damaged tissue or guarantee improved sight.

If you have concerns about your vision or eye health, an optometrist can assess the symptoms and explain whether monitoring, treatment or referral is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

What can an eye examination assess?
An examination can assess how clearly you see, whether you need a prescription and aspects of eye health. Additional tests depend on your symptoms, history and findings.

Does 6/6 or 20/20 vision mean every aspect of my eyes is healthy?
No. Visual acuity measures detail seen under particular test conditions. It does not describe every aspect of eye health or visual function.

Can all vision impairment be prevented?
No. Some causes can be prevented or treated, while others need monitoring, management or rehabilitation. The appropriate approach depends on the diagnosis.
